Archibald Hugh Mosman 1799 to 1863 Exhibition
An Australian Heritage Festival event
Mosman's namesake arrived in Sydney in 1828 and with his twin brother, George established a warehouse on George Street in the Sydney Township.
Within two years the business was dissolved and Archibald and John Bell applied for one of the newly created allotments at Great Sirius in order to establish a whaling station and premises for repairing and outfitting ships. They received the allotments and the following year set about building a stone wharf, two stone store houses, two stone dwellings and a large stone residence for a total cost of ₤5,000.
The whaling station was successful, Archibald bought Bell’s land and by 1838 owned 108 acres. The same year he transferred the business and acreage and relocated to New England for another chapter in his life.
This exhibition tells his fascinating story. A merchant, whaler and pastoralist who arrived in Sydney from Scotland via the West Indies, made a name for himself in the colony and left his name for posterity.
