More than 400 gifts donated for disadvantaged children have been delivered to The Salvation Army in time for Christmas. 

Toys, books and other items for youngsters aged up to 18 years old, were collected through the 2024 Mosman Gift Appeal. 

Community members gave generously, leaving gifts under the tree at Mosman Civic Centre, for Council to deliver to The Salvation Army for distribution to those in need this Christmas. 

Over the past four years, more than 2300 items have been donated through the festive season gift appeal. 

A Mosman Council project for new amenities at Middle Head Oval has received $2 million funding through the Federal Government’s Thriving Suburbs Program. 

The new amenities building is among 15 projects in greater Sydney and surrounding areas to share in a $60 million under the program, which is designed to build better cities and more liveable suburbs, targeting projects such as sporting and cultural hubs, libraries and parks that increase community cohesion, liveability and accessibility. 

The Middle Head Oval project involves demolishing an existing circa-1980s amenities block and replacing it with a new building, promoting greater inclusion in sports and community activities. 

The federal grant will go towards the cost of the building, with work due to commence in 2025, following a recent project determination by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.

Mosman community members have come together to take a collective stance against family and domestic violence.

The Mosman Walk for Women brought about 150 people to Rawson Oval on Friday 29 November for a short walk and a gathering at Marie Bashir Mosman Sports Centre, which provided an opportunity to connect and reflect, with addresses by a range of speakers.

They included representatives of Relationships Australia NSW, a leading provider of support services to build and maintain safe and respectful relationships; Mary's House Services, a not-for-profit, community-funded domestic and family violence support service; and the North Shore Police Area Command.

It was the third annual Walk for Women organised by Mosman Council. The event is held on or close to the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women (25 November), which marks the beginning each year of a global 16 Days of Activism campaign and culminates on Human Rights Day on 10 December.  

Long-awaited work to replace an amenities block at Middle Head Oval, promoting greater inclusion in sports and community activities, will commence in 2025 following a project determination by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust.  

Mosman Council and key site users have welcomed the decision of the Trust.

The approved project will involve demolishing an existing circa-1980s amenities block and replacing it with a new building.

Council has a longstanding perpetual licence to replace buildings in the area for active sporting purposes and worked collaboratively with stakeholders on a modern replacement for the existing amenities block, which is located on Trust land.

The new facility also aligns with the Trust’s broader vision for Middle Head, as articulated in its recently adopted masterplan.

Mosman’s festive season gift appeal is now open for 2024. Community members are invited to place new, unwrapped gifts under the Christmas tree in the Mosman Council Civic Centre foyer before 6 December. 

Gifts for children and teenagers aged from 0-18 years are welcome, including toys, books, puzzles, science kits, sporting gear, beach towels, personal accessories and toiletries. 

A small contribution has the potential to bring a great amount of joy and happiness to a young person during the festive season.

Mosman residents have traditionally generously supported Council’s annual Christmas gift appeals. Across the past three festive seasons, 1928 toys, books and other gifts were placed under the tree in the Civic Centre foyer.

Items donated this year will be distributed by The Salvation Army to disadvantaged children in the Northern Sydney region. For further enquiries call 9978 4050. 

Nominations are now open for annual awards acknowledging unsung heroes of Mosman and the contributions they make to enhance the local community. 

The Mosman Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year awards assist in fostering public spirit and recognise an individual's achievement or contribution through voluntary community service at a local level. 

The awards are open to residents who have made a particular effort during the preceding year for the benefit of Mosman, or have been involved in activities bringing credit to the Mosman area. Non-residents who have been involved in voluntary community service or other activities directly benefiting the Mosman community, environment, or bringing credit to Mosman, may also be considered.

Recipients will be rewarded and recognised for their important contribution at a 2025 Australia Day ceremony. 

The personal story of a high-profile former rugby union player and insights from medical professionals were shared through a recent Dementia Forum hosted by Mosman Council. 

The free community event aimed to promote broader discussion about sports-related dementia and neurodegenerative diseases resulting from repetitive head trauma.  

Mosman local, author, journalist, and former national rugby union player Peter FitzSimons, facilitated a discussion between former international rugby union player Michael Lipman, who shared his personal journey with sports-related dementia, and cognitive neurologist Dr Rowena Mobbs who provided insights on the future of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), emerging treatments, and preventative measures.  

The courageous stories shared and opportunities for engagement and collaboration were highlighted by many participants, along with the valuable information and support provided by Dementia Australia, CTE support organisation Connectors Australia and the Brain Foundation.

An advocacy event to raise awareness for the prevention of family and domestic violence will be held in Mosman on 29 November. 

Led by Mosman Mayor Ann Marie Kimber, the walk will begin at Rawson Oval at 10am and conclude at the Headland Park Artist Precinct in Georges Heights. The end of the walk will feature addresses by Elisabeth Shaw, Chief Executive Officer, Relationships Australia NSW, a leading provider of support services to build and maintain safe and respectful relationships; Yvette Vignando, Chief Executive Officer, Mary's House Services, a not-for-profit, community-funded domestic and family violence support service based in North Sydney; and Larissa Ryan, Sergeant and Paul Devaney, Detective Superintendent and Commander, North Shore Police Area Command.

Participants are encouraged to wear purple for the third annual Walk for Women.
