During National Road Safety Week, motorists are being encouraged to take a pledge to ‘Drive So Others Survive’.

By taking the pledge, drivers make it their personal commitment to:

• remove all distractions and never use a mobile phone while driving
• not put other people at risk by speeding
• not driving while tired or under the influence of drugs (including alcohol)
• actively protect all vulnerable road users, especially those whose job places them in harm’s way, by slowing down and giving them the space they need to be safe.

National Road Safety Week is an annual initiative run by the Safer Australian Roads and Highways Group, in partnership with road safety organisations and all levels of government to highlight the impact of road trauma and how everyone can help to make roads safer by driving safely.

Each day of National Road Safety Week focuses on a different member of the community who may be affected by road trauma. Take the pledge and see all the ways you can participate in National Road Safety Week.

National Road Safety Week runs until Sunday 18 May 2025.

The NSW Government has announced a review of both its Permit Parking Guidelines and Pay Parking and Controlled Loading Zone Guidelines and is seeking public feedback. 

Mosman Council voted at its April meeting to provide a submission that outlines its opposition to the NSW Government’s new guidelines. 

Council also resolved to encourage residents to make submissions on this matter. 

Consultation via Transport for NSW is open until 2 May 2025.

Students from Mosman primary and high schools came together for an education and environment event at Balmoral to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Clean Up Australia Day. 

The schools beach clean-up on 28 February was hosted by Mosman Council, Clean Up Australia and Green Schools Collective, which brings schools together to connect and collaborate on climate change issues and sustainability. 

Clean Up Australia was founded in 1990 by Ian Kiernan AO. Since its inception, more than 22 million Australians have registered as a volunteer for Clean Up activities within their local community year-round. The 2024 Clean Up Australia Day campaign alone collected an estimated 140,000 bags of litter nationally, highlighting the continued importance and relevance of Clean Up events and volunteers. 

A Schools Clean Up Day traditionally takes place on the Friday before the broader community Clean Up Australia Day, which in 2025 is on Sunday 2 March. 

A groundbreaking virtual reality (VR) training program is being delivered in a Council partnership with Dementia Australia. 

A workshop hosted at Mosman Civic Centre brought together a local group of aged care professionals, including staff from Council, Twilight Aged Care Glengarry, Sue’s Home Care Nursing, and Sydney North Health Network, to participate in ‘D-Esc’ - a groundbreaking Dementia Australia VR training program.  

Considered a world-first, the initiative is designed to help professionals effectively de-escalate behavioural emergencies in dementia care, setting a new standard in the industry. 

Through immersive, hands-on training, participants gained confidence in their ability to:

• Recognise emotional and physical signs of escalation
• Understand how stress affects a person with dementia
• Apply person-centred de-escalation techniques
• Contribute to debriefing to identify potential triggers
• Reduce the risk of harm for both individuals with dementia and staff

Through training programs such as D-Esc, professionals are working together to create safer, more compassionate environments for those living with dementia.

Mosman Art Walk is returning for its fifth year, from 20 February to 11 March. 

Mosman High School's popular local fundraiser will feature the works of more than 50 accomplished professional artists, including many from Mosman, exhibited in the windows of shops and businesses in Mosman Village. 

The displays are located along a three-kilometre walking route. Works are available to purchase, with 30 per cent donated to assist Mosman High's art students with equipment and excursions, while 70 per cent goes directly to the artist.

The initiative received $2000 from Council as part of its 2024/25 Community Grants Program. 

Susie Agoston has been named 2025 Mosman Citizen of the Year as part of an Australia Day event at Mosman Drill Hall, which also included a citizenship ceremony.

Long-standing Mosman resident Susie was recognised for her many contributions across the arts, sports, education and philanthropy - from curating art exhibitions that provide a platform for Indigenous artists to share their stories and culture, to leading bush regeneration efforts in places such as Memory Park, to coaching community and school-based netball teams, and spearheading fundraising efforts for vital causes.

While Susie was unable to attend today’s event in person, her son David accepted the award on her behalf.

Mosman Mayor Ann Marie Kimber also presided over a citizenship ceremony, with 60 conferees from 29 countries taking the pledge to become Australian citizens.

The 1st Balmoral Sea Scouts and the Lions Club were also on hand to help with proceedings and a barbecue lunch, while representatives from the Australian Electoral Commission attended to help ensure our newest citizens are enrolled to vote at federal, state and local government elections.
