Balmoral Baths is now open

Balmoral Baths is now open. 

The area had been closed since Wednesday following reports of a shark sighting. 

Divers today inspected waters inside the area and the perimeter net’s anchor chains.

The net had been lifted in parts following the shark sighting to support the animal to leave the enclosure naturally. The nets are now reinstated. 

The nets are inspected regularly as part of routine maintenance. 

Council also in the past month engaged renowned shark experts and University of Sydney staff to inform our processes to help ensure we have the right balance regarding risk assessments. 

While baths are generally considered a safer option than open ocean, members of the public are always encouraged to be aware of weather and water conditions. Shark incidents may occur more frequently after rain when the water is murkier and when baitfish is around.
