Councillor Tom Sherlock has been elected as Mosman Council’s Deputy Mayor for the 12-month term to September 2019.
The election of Deputy Mayor took place at Council’s meeting on 4 September with Mayor Carolyn Corrigan congratulating Cr Sherlock on his appointment and thanking Cr Roy Bendall for his support as Deputy Mayor over the previous 12 months.
Cr Sherlock was first elected to Council in 2008 and this is his first term as Deputy Mayor.
Congratulations to the 18 young writers who were awarded cash prizes for this year’s Mosman Youth Awards in Literature at the Presentation Evening held at Barry O’Keefe Library on Wednesday 29 August.
This year marked the 26th year of the competition which attracted 410 entries from both local and regional students.
The presentation evening was attended by 125 people including short-listed entrants and their families, teachers, sponsors, competition judges and Councillors. The judges commented on the very high standard of entries and the variety of topics written. They also congratulated all the short-listed writers on their writing saying that the high standard made it very hard to choose the winners.
This year’s awards were sponsored by Rotary Club of Mosman, Mosman Lions Club, Mosman Zu Cafe, Oracle Books Mosman and Mosman Community College. The total amount awarded for prizes was $2,300.
Expressions of Interest – Independent Member to Internal Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee
Mosman Council is seeking to appoint an independent member with appropriate skills, to its Audit Risk and Improvement Committee. The key role of the Committee is to provide independent assurance and assistance to Council on its risk, control and compliance framework.
Applicants need not reside within Mosman. The Committee will meet as required, but not less than four times during a calendar year. An attendance fee of $600 per meeting including preparation time is paid to Independent Committee members.

Critical refurbishment works will be underway on Mosman’s Civic Centre from mid-August.
While primarily focused on essential repair work to Mosman Council’s ageing ventilation, flooring, furniture and drainage systems, the Civic Centre Upgrade will also improve disability access and facilities in the Chambers and adjoining Seniors Centre, and modernise the customer service area and foyer.
Access to the Seniors Centre lounge and office will continue during the refurbishment, which is expected to finish late December, and Mosman Meals will also remain open so customers can collect meals as usual.

Almost 800 people dropped off their e-waste for recycling at Mosman Council’s free e-waste drop off day on Sunday 5 August.
Mosman residents contributed a range of e-waste including computers, laptops, TVs, DVD/CD players and mobile phones with more than 90% of material being diverted from landfill.
e-waste contains many finite resources such as gold, copper and silver and some materials are toxic to the environment, containing high levels of lead and mercury.
The next e-waste collection will be held in 2019.
Complimentary 2018/19 Foreshore Parking Permits (valid from 1 July 2018) have been posted to ratepayers who previously received a 2017/18 permit.

As part of its annual weed control program Council will be undertaking broad scale spraying of selective herbicides on its Sporting Ovals and Parks and Reserves to control broad leaf weeds in turf areas during the following periods:

Councils Pesticide Use Notification Plan requires Council advertise broad scale spraying of herbicide to allow members of the public the opportunity to avoid contact with herbicide application. Council will ensure the herbicides are applied to public places in a safe, responsible manner, minimising harm to the community and the environment. Council will also ensure that all legislative requirements are met and followed. Council will have relevant safety data sheets on hand to respond to enquiries.

Council will be conducting a major community survey in mid-June to ask residents about local issues and Council performance. This survey will be carried out randomly by telephone and will take around 15 minutes to complete.
Market research staff will also be in Mosman prior to the survey rollout to gather contact numbers, again randomly, from interested residents. This approach helps reach possible survey respondents who are not otherwise contactable on landlines.
If you are contacted and have a little time to spare, consider sharing your views. This will help Council identify areas of concern as well as future priorities and opportunities for improvement.
Special Event Clearways will be in place in the Taronga Zoo area from Friday 25 May to Saturday 16 June for the Vivid Taronga Zoo event. There are no programmed road closures in the area for the event.
Clearways will be in effect from 5pm to 10pm on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and the Monday of the Queen’s Birthday Long Weekend. Clearways affect both directions unless stated otherwise. Motorists are advised to check signs before parking as vehicles in Special Event Clearways will be towed and fines apply.
