Recycle your e-waste at the free e-waste drop off day on Sunday 24 February in Mosman. Residents from Mosman and Sydney-wide are invited to drop off their unwanted e-waste items.

e-waste contains many finite resources such as gold, copper and silver. Some materials contained in e-waste are toxic to our environment, containing high levels of lead and mercury. Don’t let these items end up in landfill!

Items collected will be sent to MRI for recycling, diverting more than 90% of material from landfill.

Refurbishment of Mosman’s Barry O’Keefe Library is complete, with the beloved community hub now offering a beautiful indoor garden reading room, among other essential and aesthetic improvements.

The Library has also been fully recarpeted throughout, received patchwork painting and repairs where needed and undergone vital roof replacement works.

Library Services Manager Linda Horswell said services and physical library access had been maintained throughout the upgrade, which commenced after high school examinations were complete.

“This required a lot of hard work from our library team and patience from our customers and neighbours as there was a bit of noise and things needed to be moved around,” Linda said.

“It was well organised and well worth the time and effort though and I invite residents who haven’t been to the library in a while to please come and enjoy our revitalised community space!”

Linda also thanked the Library Council of New South Wales, who provided $185,000 funding towards the space through its Library Infrastructure Grants Program.

Inviting visitors to enjoy natural light against a living green wall backdrop, the new reading space replaced a small, unusable and inaccessible courtyard in the library’s lower level. The space is now fully constructed and open for use, with some beautiful reading furniture to follow soon.

The tranquil zone and library improvements formed part of the Civic Centre Upgrade, a larger-scale project to undertake critical repairs and much-anticipated facility improvements to civic facilities including the Civic Centre, Seniors Hall and Youth Development Centre.

Mosman Library Service provides lending and information services and an extensive range of resources, activities and events for all ages. The Library offers exciting programs for children and teens, a regular visiting authors program and a unique collection of material on Mosman’s history and heritage.

Middle Head Oval has been undergoing extensive upgrades to its playing surface, with works having commenced in early September.

Turfing works were completed mid-December and contractors will be scarifying, broadleaf weed spraying, fertilising and top dressing in late January. The turf species is used was Couch, known for its tendency to keep its green colour better than other varieties throughout winter and is more tolerant to wear which will assist with the its usage demands.

The oval will be finished by mid-February, with it open and available for use from 16 February.

A Citizenship Ceremony will commence at 10am for new citizens, followed by an Australia Day Address by Mosman’s Australia Day Ambassador, medical practitioner, best-selling author and media personality Dr Cindy Pan. Mosman’s 2019 Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year will then be announced.

All those present are invited to join a community BBQ generously run by the Lions Club of Mosman.

In conjunction with the Australia Day Council of NSW, Mosman Council seeks nominations annually for the Mosman Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year. The Awards assist in fostering public spirit and recognise an individual’s achievement and/or contribution through voluntary community service at a local level.

These awards are open to any person who has contributed in a significant way to the Mosman community. Past award recipients have contributed to the community in a variety of ways, through involvement in education, health, sport, community groups, safety, local history, local events and festivals, the arts, youth services, church groups and the environment.

Barry O’Keefe Library will be receiving some much-anticipated renovations and repairs.

The beloved civic facility will be recarpeted throughout, receive patchwork painting and repairs where needed and undergo vital roof rectification works. Additionally we will see the currently unusable outside space on the lower floor converted to a tranquil indoor garden reading and study zone.

While the library will remain open during this time there will be periods of noise disruption – sometimes mild to moderate and other times significant – with some sections of the library closed intermittently.

The lower floor reading and study area will be closed in the post-HSC period to accommodate a site office but access will be maintained to the Mosman Room (Local Studies), meeting rooms and computers.

Further updates will be provided on this website and in signage around the library as the work progresses.

Customer Service at Mosman Council Civic Centre is currently being refurbished as part of the Civic Centre upgrade works. Works will be ongoing until the end of November. Customer Service will remain open however there may be minor interruptions to functions at times.

Residents are invited to have their say about a new State Government marine park proposal in the Newcastle-Sydney-Wollongong region.

The community and other stakeholders are encouraged to provide feedback on the proposal by completing the online submission form by 27 September 2018.

Comments are sought on the:

• 25 sites comprising the park proposal
• the management changes proposed at each site
• and/or the benefits and costs to your activities, community or industry.

The information provided will inform the final marine park proposal to be considered by the NSW Government. Existing management rules will remain in place, and none of the proposals will be implemented until the NSW Government announces the outcome.

Council contractors are currently renovating sport fields after heavy use throughout the winter season. Works include the removal of compacted and worn areas (soil and old turf milled and redistributed to other parks within Mosman), relevelling of playing surface, returfing and topdressing. A total of 14,000 square meters of turf will be laid and 328 tonnes of 80/20 topsoil (80% sand and 20% soil per tonne). Ovals will be available for use for the summer season from 1 October 2018.

Middle Head Oval is excluded from the above, as the playing surface will be redeveloped with works commencing early September. All stakeholders have been advised and works on Middle Head Oval are expected to be completed by December 2018 with it available for use from the end of January 2019.
