Mosman Council’s Youth Services team is reviewing the findings of its comprehensive youth consultation which identified the most significant issues for young people who live, work and play in Mosman.

Key recommendations of the MyVoice Consultation report included addressing the importance of rest for mental health and sustained success, providing a safe space where young people can find information and support and opening communication lines between parents and young people.

Mosman Youth Services will be working with young people to put the consultation findings into action and are sharing the results with other local stakeholders who are living and working with youth. The full MyVoice Consultation report can be viewed on the Youth page of the website.

Major concerns for young people identified in the report include academic pressure, closely followed by body image then alcohol, along with drugs, smoking and peer pressure.

Work will begin next month to replace the turning boards at the popular Balmoral Baths.

The boards, which are more than 40 years old and beyond their service life, require frequent costly maintenance so that swimmers can continue to use them to turn while doing laps, training and competitions.

The works were designed by a specialist marine consultant and include the reinforcement of structural piles, removal and replacement of the existing turning boards and the construction of a new pontoon-type turning board.

The upgrade was delayed until the cooler months and while maintaining access is a priority, the horseshoe end of the baths will be closed during the works due to safety issues.

They are out and about looking to see if locals and visitors are taking care of our sporting grounds, while promoting an anti-litter campaign aimed at helping to keep Mosman’s sports fields in good shape, clean and litter free.

It could be something as easy as promising to use a reusable cup the next time you order your take away hot drink or pledging to use a reusable water bottle while on the go. You may even want to make a commitment to taking care of our ovals and open spaces in some way.

Of course, no one enjoys litter and the best thing of all is to have a lovely unspoilt space to play or watch your favourite sport.

The waste detectives are brought to you in partnership with Mosman Council, NSW EPA Waste Less Recycle More initiative funded from the waste levy and Eaton Gorge Theatre Company.

A community information session on NSW Government-mandated changes to independent planning panels will be held at Council Chambers, Mosman Civic Centre, on Wednesday 7 February at 6:30pm.

These changes will affect the operation of Mosman Council’s successful MDAP planning panel which makes decision on the outcomes of DAs.

Mosman Council has asked the State Government to allow MDAP to retain its current processes and allow Councillors to assess DAs on public land.

Twenty one bus shelters will be replaced and one new shelter will be constructed in Mosman in coming months. The new shelter will be located at The Spit.

This work coincides with removal of four bus shelters in Clifford Street, Military Road and Spit Road at the direction of Transport for NSW, arising from the State Government’s B-Line project.

Council’s bus shelter construction and replacement program, due to be completed by the end of May, is part of a contract entered into following a public tender process in 2017.

The 15 year contract provides residents and visitors to Mosman with newly designed, fully maintained bus shelters at no cost to Council, as well as a significant revenue stream that will assist in delivery of other local projects.

Residents of Thursday waste delivery Zone 3 (previously known as Zone 4.3) are advised to refer to the Bin Collection dates page on this website for waste and recycling collection information as there has been an unavoidable delay to the delivery of 2018 calendars. Alternatively, download the MyMosman app for your waste and recycling calendar.

Calendars are now scheduled for delivery to these households in the third week of January.

While there has been a slight change to the name of the zone, there has been no change to the waste and recycling bin pick-up days. Christmas tree pick-ups will take place in the second week of January as usual.

Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan, Councillors and staff wish everyone in Mosman and their families the very best for Christmas and the festive season.

Apart from public holidays, Mosman Civic Centre, Mosman Square Seniors Centre, Mosman Art Gallery and the Barry O’Keefe Library will be open during normal hours over the period with the exception of:

• 3pm closure on Friday 15 and Friday 22 December 2017
• Barry O’Keefe Library will close at 5.30pm on Thursday 28 December 2017 rather than 9pm
• Mosman Occasional Care Centre will close on Thursday 21 December 2017 and reopen on Tuesday 23 January 2018
• Mosman Youth Centre will close on Friday 15 December 2017 and reopen on Monday 22 January 2018
• Marie Bashir Mosman Sports Centre will be closed from 3pm on Friday 22 December 2017, and reopen on Thursday 4 January 2018
• The Meals on Wheels kitchen will close on Friday 22 December 2017 and reopen on Tuesday 2 January 2018
• The Rangers office will be closed Christmas Day and will be open 6am to 5pm on Boxing Day, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day
• Waste collections will continue as normal.

The Greater Sydney Commission has released revised draft district plans for each of the five districts within the Greater Sydney Region, including the Revised Draft North District Plan applicable to Mosman, along with the local government areas of Hornsby, Hunter’s Hill, Ku-ring-gai, Lane Cove, Northern Beaches, North Sydney, Ryde and Willoughby. District plans will guide implementation of the Commission’s draft Greater Sydney Region Plan at the district level over the next 20 years, acting as a bridge between regional and local planning, to inform local council planning and guide decisions of State agencies.

The Revised Draft North District Plan:

• Identifies the District’s economy as being focussed on the Eastern Economic Corridor which includes North Sydney as part of the Harbour CBD, St Leonards, Chatswood and Macquarie Park, with other strategic centres in the District including Brookvale-Dee Why, Frenchs Forest, Hornsby, Manly and Mona Vale, and need to improve connections.
• Recognises the District’s enviable natural assets including vast native bushland, national parks, beaches and major waterways such as Sydney Harbour, the Parramatta River, Pittwater and the Hawkesbury-Nepean Rivers, and need to protect such areas, and enhance the ‘green grid’ and urban tree canopy.
• Forecasts the District population will grow from 887,000 people to around 1.1 million people over the next 20 years (around 11% of Greater Sydney’s total growth). An estimated 92,000 additional dwellings will be required to accommodate this growth by 2036. Housing and jobs will be targeted in the ‘right places’, aligned to new and enhanced infrastructure. Mosman’s five-year housing target of 300 dwellings is unchanged.
