In conjunction with the Australia Day Council of NSW, Mosman Council seeks nominations annually for the Mosman Citizen of the Year and Young Citizen of the Year. The Awards assist in fostering public spirit and recognise an individual’s achievement and/or contribution through voluntary community service at a local level.

These awards are open to any person who has contributed in a significant way to the Mosman community. Past award recipients have contributed to the community in a variety of ways, through involvement in education, health, sport, community groups, safety, local history, local events and festivals, the arts, youth services, church groups and the environment.

Indonesian born Mosman-based artist Jumaadi has been awarded the prestigious acquisitive first prize in the Mosman Art Prize of $50,000.

The 24-panel acrylic work, Some kind of record, 2016, which explores the artist’s cultural roots, now enters the celebrated Mosman Art Collection.

In its 70th anniversary year, the competition received more than 750 entries from around Australia with a total of $65,000 in prize money awarded to artists across four categories.

The art prize is Australia’s oldest and most recognised local government art award and to commemorate the award’s 70th anniversary, the major prize – sponsored by Mosman Council – increased from $30,000 to $50,000, in a strong vote of confidence in the importance and esteem with which the prize is held.

Expressions of Interest – Independent Member to Internal Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee

Mosman Council is seeking to appoint an independent member with appropriate skills, to its Audit Risk and Improvement Committee. The key role of the Committee is to provide independent assurance and assistance to Council on its risk, control and compliance framework.

Applicants need not reside within Mosman. The Committee will meet as required, but not less than four times during a calendar year. An attendance fee of $600 per meeting including preparation time is paid to Independent Committee members.

The next Council meeting which was scheduled to take place Tuesday 19 September 2017 has been adjourned due to the delayed proclamation of the new Council and is scheduled for Friday 22 September 2017 at 7pm.

Cr Carolyn Corrigan has been declared Mayor of Mosman following the official announcement of Mosman’s election result on 18 September.

Councillors Roy Bendall, Simon Menzies, Libby Moline and Tom Sherlock have also been returned to Council and are joined by new Councillors David Cook and Jacqui Willoughby.

Cr Corrigan, who ran on the Serving Mosman ticket, replaces Mosman’s retiring Mayor Peter Abelson. She was first elected to Mosman Council in 2012 and previously served as Deputy Mayor from 2015 to 2016.

Congratulations to the finalists for the 2017 Mosman Art Prize. With over 750 artworks received this year, the judge Kirsten Paisley, Deputy Director of the National Gallery of Australia had the very difficult task of selecting 88 artworks as finalists for the exhibition.

The Mosman Art Prize exhibition will be open to the public for viewing from Saturday 23 September until Sunday 29 October 2017.

The much anticipated announcement of the awards including the $50,000 Acquisitive First Prize, $10,000 Margaret Olley Award, $3,000 Allan Gamble Award and the $2,000 Emerging Artist Award will take place on Thursday 28 September.

Twenty eight community groups have received a welcome boost to their programs and services through the presentation of community grants by Mosman Council.

The grants, totalling more than $57,000, and generally up to $2,000 each, are provided as part of Council’s 2017/18 Community Grants program that assists non-profit community groups deliver projects that meet identified community needs.

The grants have been awarded for a range of projects, including digitisation of historical resources; contributing to the refurbishment of the Wishing Well at Balmoral; providing a greenhouse and watering system at Mackie Lane Community Garden; and assisting Life Education programs in local schools.

Recycle your e-waste at the free e-waste drop off day on Sunday 27 August in Mosman. Residents from Mosman and Sydney-wide are invited to drop off their unwanted e-waste items.

e-waste contains many finite resources such as gold, copper and silver. Some materials contained in e-waste are toxic to our environment, containing high levels of lead and mercury. Don’t let these items end up in landfill!

Items collected will be sent to MRI for recycling, diverting more than 98% of material from landfill.

A State Significant Development Application (SSD 8008) has been submitted by the Taronga Conservation Society to the NSW Department of Planning and Environment to construct new African Savannah and Congo Forest exhibits, and new visitor amenities, as well as the partial demolition of existing African Safari and Orangutan Rainforest exhibits, the removal of trees and landscaping works.

The application, Environmental Impact Statement and accompanying documents may be viewed on the Department’s website from 4 August until 4 September 2017. Hard copies of documents are available for viewing at Council offices.

Mosman Council has welcomed the State Government’s decision not to proceed with the forced amalgamation of councils in metropolitan Sydney, including the proposed merger of Mosman Council with Willoughby and North Sydney Councils.

The Council has remained firmly opposed to amalgamation, with numerous resident and ratepayer polls consistently indicating over 80% local support for Mosman to remain independent.

The State Government backdown comes weeks ahead of the election of a new Council on 9 September and the development of a new MOSPLAN next year to guide Council’s efforts over the next decade.
