Community Connections

Community Connections works with the community to strengthen resilience, support wellbeing and empowerment, and improve community connection throughout Mosman. We facilitate connection via networks that join government, non-government organisations, community groups and community to increase inclusivity and to ensure Mosman is a safe and welcoming area for all.

Research  shows this is best done by building connections to enhance both individual wellbeing and collective strength.

Empowering Community

Asset Based Community Development

Asset Based Community Development (ABCD) is a strengths-based approach to community development. Utilising this approach ensures the community is at the centre of planning and decision making.

Working together to enhance and support all that is valued in Mosman, we learn to:

  • Find and grow our community's strengths.
  • Keep our community's voice loud and clear in decisions.
  • Get everyone involved, excited and active.
  • Boost our local leaders (maybe you’ll be one too!).
  • Make connections, build relationships & strengthen our ties across community.

Join us as we develop opportunities and resources to bring all Mosman residents together to encourage active participation in broad community conversations.

We run regular training on ABCD with the Jeder Institute. Check Events Mosman for upcoming workshops.

Community Emergency Preparedness

Council is in partnership with organisations, from Government and inter-Council networks, global alliances, and local environmental groups and community members that are participating in climate action. As part of this, Council is working with the community to develop resources, ongoing workshops and access to information enabling residents to be well prepared in the event of extreme weather events.

In knowing our neighbours and taking a person-centred approach, we can ensure each person is prepared and supported to be safe, and access relevant information promptly.

Community Grants

Mosman Council recognises the importance of working with community organisations to support the valuable work they to build and strengthen the community.

To acknowledge this contribution, Council makes funds available annually through its Community Grants program. The awarding of grants are underpinned by a community development philosophy and driven by three key principles:

  • Capacity building of the community
  • Empowerment of community members through the work of community groups
  • Social wellbeing of the community

If you would like to receive updates about future grants, email communitygrants@mosman.nsw.gov.au with your contact details and name of the organisation you represent.

Events Mosman

Council runs multiple community connections events and workshops throughout the year. They can be shared on the Mosman Events website.

Events Mosman promotes events that support Mosman’s unique identity and lifestyle, and to encourage participation in local initiatives.

You are welcome to submit your event on this website if the event:

  • occurs at a venue or location within Mosman;
  • is open to the general public; and
  • has broad appeal for people from the local community as well as visitors to our area.

Building Social Cohesion

Mosman Clubs

As well as the annual Community Grants program, council maintains a mailing list of all Mosman Clubs. News, information and events information is regularly sent throughout the year to connect and inform each organisation. Get in touch with Council via connect@mosman.nsw.gov.au if you represent a Community Group and would like to be on the mailing list.

Community Champions

Community Champions are essential in building a vibrant and connected Mosman. Our goal is to ensure that champions, as advocates for the community can assist Mosman to be a welcoming place for everyone.

  • Community Champions meetups: We run regular community champions meetups to discuss future project and events and consult with the champions and their expertise. Email connect@mosman.nsw.gov.au to join.
  • As advocates, the Community Champions work together to connect, represent and support opportunities that have been initiated by, and with the Mosman community.
  • Champions volunteer program: If you are passionate about making a lasting difference in the community, you can also register to become a champions volunteer, allowing you to play a more active role in the community.

Community Conversations

Out in the Community

Chatty Café Australia

Mosman Council partnered with Chatty Café Australia in 2023, becoming the first in New South Wales. With a growing number of Cafes, and venues across Mosman, we are supporting opportunities for residents to meet with others, share stories and discover something new.

Whether it is for five minutes or an hour- just a friendly, relaxed conversation that just might brighten someone’s day!

Chatty Cafe is about building friendly connections, meeting someone new. This is a safe, welcoming space for anyone to join, and an opportunity for people to connect, share and get to know each other. Join us as we get to know each other better.

Community Conversations

Keep an eye out for the Community Connections team from council as we get out and about to chat with you, connect, and share opportunities to participate, volunteer, and learn more about what is available for the community. This might be out and about in Mosman throughout the week, at the Mosman Markets, and other events throughout the year. It’s always a great opportunity learn or share something new!

Roundtable Events

Roundtable Events provide an opportunity for all members of the community, from Council, businesses, community services, Community Champions and residents to meet, learn, share knowledge and support decision making and participation.

In spending a day focused on specific themes, we can develop a clear pathway to further strengthen partnerships and meet the needs of the community.

Email connect@mosman.nsw.gov.au to register your interest to participate in the Roundtable events.

Say Hello Mosman

Say Hello, Mosman! is a campaign to make our community friendlier and more connected. It's all about encouraging everyone to simply say "hello" to each other. Whether you're passing someone on the street, shopping, and getting to know your neighbours, your hello can build a closer community.

We want Mosman to be known for its friendliness, where every hello can turn into a new friendship and make our community stronger and more resilient.

Launching in 2025, more information to come!
