Graphic Novels for Adults

New Collection of Graphic Novels for Adults

The Library now holds a new collection of over a thousand graphic novels aimed at an adult audience.

Some of these are graphic retellings of classic novels such as “The Alchemist” by Coelho, “The Handmaid’s Tale” by Margaret Atwood, or “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.

Some are fun continuations of other novels (the Ben Aaronovich “Rivers of London” series, the illustrated “Joe Hill” compendium, the “Witcher” TV series, and various other movie and TV tie-ins).

Some deal with adult themes of aging, dying, romance, mental health, or race issues. We recommend the beautiful award winner “Blossoms in Autumn”, “Marbles”, or “Strange Fruit”.

We will even have a few non-fiction graphic books, such as “The Comic Book Story of Beer”, “My New York Marathon”, or Anthony Boudain’s “Hungry Ghosts” (a horror story with recipes, very unique!).

Some of the books, such as “Hark! A Vagrant” or “Strange Planet” are, of course, just for fun!

Check the Adult Graphic Novels Collection on our website or come in and browse.

Note: Some of these titles do encompass adult themes and will be placed in the non-fiction area (next to Spy and Adventure) away from the children and young adult areas.

New amenities open

Fully accessible facilities with family-friendly, ambulant and unisex toilets, as well as a drinking water fountain, have been officially opened at Mosman Junction.

Minister for Families, Communities and Disability Services Gareth Ward joined Mosman Mayor Carolyn Corrigan in cutting the ribbon. Council representatives and members of the local Access and Mobility Community Consultative Committee also attended the opening of the new facilities, adjacent to the Raglan Street West Carpark.

The amenities were partly funded by the NSW Government’s 2019 ‘My Community Project’ program, following the development of a grant application and promotion by members of Mosman’s Access and Mobility Committee.

The accessible toilets project was one of 12 submitted from the North Shore electorate and received overwhelming support in an online vote from the Mosman community.

A grant of $200,000 was subsequently provided by the NSW Government and Mosman Council, as sponsor, provided supplementary funding and delivered the project within 12 months.

R U OK? Day

Residents are being reminded to ask, “Are you OK?” if someone nearby is struggling with life’s ups and downs on R U OK? Day on Thursday 10 September.

The national day of action is particularly important in 2020 which has been a challenging year and circumstances have made it even more important for residents to stay connected and, for those who are able, be willing to support those around us.

You don’t have to be an expert to keep the conversation going when someone says they’re not OK. By knowing what to say you can help someone feel supported and access appropriate help long before they’re in crisis, which can make a really positive difference to their life.

Visit the R U OK? website for tips and ideas to help you share the message in the community and learn what to say after R U OK?

Free e-waste drop off day

Mosman Council is holding its free biannual e-waste collection this weekend.

E-waste contains finite resources such as gold, copper and silver, as well as materials that can be environmentally toxic if they end up in landfill, such as lead and mercury.

Recycling e-waste means that these materials can instead be recovered and recycled into new products.

The collection will take computers, laptops, monitors, TVs, DVD/CD/VHS media and players, printers, small electrical appliances, mobile phones, game consoles, microwaves, light bulbs, and computer peripherals. For security, it’s recommended to wipe data from devices beforehand.

Drop off is at the Civic Centre carpark, The Crescent, Mosman, 9am-4pm, Sunday 13 September.

COVID-19 Important information

Residents are asked to adhere to the following hygiene and physical distancing measures for the drop off:
  • Quarantine e-waste in the car boot for at least 24 hours prior to collection.
  • Remain in the car and pop the boot or give permission for staff to manually open your boot to remove e-waste items.
  • Ensure the boot only contains e-waste to avoid any confusion regarding items to be collected.

Conditions may change at short notice pending updated public health orders from the Federal and NSW Governments.

Residents are asked to advise staff of any known potential risks and not to attend if feeling unwell.

For more information on e-waste options for Mosman residents visit: mosman.nsw.gov.au/e-waste

Get Prepared for Spring

Mosman residents and businesses are being encouraged to include disaster and crisis preparations in their Spring planning by downloading and completing an emergency plan on the Get Prepared app.

The app, which is being promoted during this week’s Emergency Preparedness Week from 31 August to 6 September 2020 , helps connect users with their key support people, accomplish simple tasks to make users and their loved ones safer, and protect the things that matter most.

The free and easy to use tool helps users take the following steps to prepare for any type of emergency:
  1. Establish a quick and easy network of support with three key contacts
  2. Review the risks relevant to where you live
  3. Create checklists of actions to make an emergency plan and
  4. Save the emergency plan as a PDF to be printed and shared with others.

As a participating council in the Resilient Sydney program, Mosman Council is collaborating with other Sydney councils to improve connections, inclusiveness and resilience.
