From the Mayor - 25 May 2022

Posted on Wednesday 25 May 2022

On the back of National Volunteer Week when we recognise and celebrate the caring generosity of community contribution, I want to give a shout-out to the many volunteers who over the past weeks and months have given such time and energy to support their candidate or political party. Bravo for participating and getting involved in what is such a precious privilege - our democratic right to vote.

2022 marks the 40th anniversary of the Mosman Public School Mini-Mos Fun Run event. Council is a long-time supporter and all that is needed on Sunday 19 June is sunshine and lots of keen and eager runners. Sadly, I can’t attend as I will be in Canberra with Cr Michael Randall and the General Manager attending the National General Assembly of Local Government. This is a most timely assembly, given the Federal Government elections have just occurred.

A central nexus providing Council with ongoing community engagement is our Community Consultative Committees. Most committees are up and running with a wonderful mix of new faces and experienced community representatives. Last but not least, the Active Transport Committee is due to hold its first meeting on 8 June.

The totally amazing Mosman Youth Art Prize exhibition runs until Sunday 12 June at the Mosman Art Gallery. Then, to mark the upcoming 75th Mosman Art Prize, the Gallery will host a retrospective exhibition of past winners. This truly wonderful exhibition, opening on 18 June will showcase Council’s collection of modern and contemporary Australian art. Another wonderful creative community event will be the Mosman Symphony Orchestra performing at the Mosman Art Gallery Hall on 4 and 5 June. I applaud their commitment to encourage young people to enjoy orchestral music by making their performances free to students under the age of 16.

I urge you to also enjoy Vivid and Mosman’s own Wild Lights at Taronga Zoo heralded by a larger-than life tiger lantern on Council’s Civic Centre.

In closing, I pay sincere respect to Queen Elizabeth II who is about to celebrate her platinum jubilee marking her 70 years of service. What an amazing woman and leader and whether you are pro-republic or pro-monarchy, everyone honours the lifelong contribution she has made to the Commonwealth.
