Water safety reminder

Posted on Tuesday 20 January 2026

Sydney beaches are getting a lot of warnings right now. Recent heavy rain has made the water murky and polluted, and there’s been an increase in shark activity - including a few recent incidents - especially around the harbour and along the coast.

Experts say to avoid swimming in harbours and rivers for a few days after rain, and to be extra careful at ocean beaches. Always check Beachwatch for water quality updates and swim between the red and yellow flags.

Quick safety tips:

  • Don’t swim at dawn, dusk or at night
  • Skip the swim if the water looks dirty
  • Avoid swimming alone
  • Stay close to shore
  • Keep away from fishing spots
  • Steer clear of baitfish schools
